Nora had every reason to ignore Celeste’s problem.
Celeste’s false review years earlier nearly destroyed her bakery. It spread fast because it sounded like a safety concern. Nora proved it was false, but proof traveled slower than gossip.
When Celeste booked the bridal shower, Nora accepted because the bride was not responsible for Celeste’s past. She prepared the correct cake: vanilla berry, no almond. That morning, a hotel courier brought a similar white box by mistake. Celeste’s assistant placed it on the party table without checking the bakery label.
Nora noticed the box tape was wrong. Her bakery used blue tape. This box had gold tape. Then she saw the corner of an almond tag under the flap.
She stopped the cake before the bride took a bite.
Celeste tried to frame it as revenge until the tag proved otherwise. The bride’s family saw the order slip. The hotel admitted the delivery mix-up. Nora brought out the correct cake from the fridge.
Celeste apologized in front of the shower guests.
“I lied about her ingredients once,” she said. “Today she checked mine anyway.”
Nora did not hug her. She did not need to.
She asked Celeste to post the correction publicly with the same confidence she had once used for the lie.
Celeste did.
The bakery gained three new orders that week, but the better reward was quieter: when people mentioned Nora’s cakes afterward, they no longer whispered about the old review.
They talked about the almond tag she refused to ignore.
