PART 2 Why Lily Gave Scout Away

Text size

Jenna had planned to surrender Scout before Lily woke up.

She believed watching the dog leave would make the separation worse.

So she arranged an early animal-control pickup while she went to sign the lease.

It was a practical decision made in the cruelest possible way.

Jenna had spent four months moving Lily between friends’ couches and motel rooms.

The new apartment was affordable, near Lily’s school and available immediately.

But the landlord refused pets.

Jenna chose housing.

She told herself Scout would be adopted by a better family.

She did not tell Lily until the night before because she knew her daughter would resist.

Lily overheard the motel clerk confirming the morning pickup.

That was when she went to Elena.

At the adoption event, Jenna admitted the truth.

“I was going to let you wake up after he was gone.”

Lily looked at her.

“That would have been worse.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You knew it then.”

Jenna could not deny it.

Elena held Scout’s temporary foster records.

The rescue coordinator explained the options.

Scout could not legally return to Jenna’s current apartment.

Elena could continue fostering him.

Or the approved family could proceed with adoption.

Lily immediately chose Elena.

Jenna looked hurt.

“You trust her more than me?”

Lily answered:

“With Scout, yes.”

The honesty landed hard.

Elena did not celebrate.

She knelt beside Lily.

“I can keep him while your mother finds pet-friendly housing. But I will not help you hide him from her again.”

Lily nodded.

Jenna asked:

“And if it takes months?”

Elena looked at Scout.

“Then he stays with me for months.”

The rescue agreed to a long-term foster arrangement.

Jenna remained Scout’s legal owner temporarily, but veterinary and daily-care authority went to Elena.

Nothing would change without Lily being told first.

That condition mattered most.

Over the next several weeks, Lily visited Scout every Saturday.

Jenna came too.

At first, she sat in her car.

Then Elena invited her inside.

The two women did not become friends.

Jenna still believed Elena had crossed a boundary by taking the dog.

Elena still believed Jenna had confused secrecy with protection.

Both were right.

Jenna began searching for different housing.

She took extra weekend shifts and applied for a small duplex that accepted pets.

Three months later, the application was approved.

On the day Scout was supposed to return, Lily arrived at Elena’s apartment with the leash.

Scout greeted her wildly.

Then he ran to Jenna.

For the first time at the adoption event, he had run away from her.

Now he pressed against her knees.

Jenna crouched and held his face.

“I’m sorry.”

Scout licked her hand.

Elena packed his food, medication and favorite blanket.

Lily looked at her.

“You’re going to miss him.”

“Yes.”

“You could keep him.”

Elena shook her head.

“He was never mine to win.”

Lily held out the leash.

Elena did not take it.

Instead, she placed it in Jenna’s hand.

“Do not make her wake up to an empty room again.”

Jenna nodded.

“I won’t.”

Scout left with Lily and Jenna.

But every Tuesday evening, they returned to walk with Elena around the block.

Not because the dog could not choose between them.

Because nobody needed to disappear for Scout to remain loved.
